Who will take the "impossible job"
It has often been said that managing the England national team is the "impossible job". A lack of passion for international football and a league that is just too dominant in terms of financial potential coupled with a lack of home grown players are all cited as reasons for England not being successful at International level for a long time. Fabio Capello’s shock resignation yesterday sent shock waves throughout Europe and especially in England and Italy.
But who will succeed him and more importantly who will want to succeed him? The latest betting sees Harry Redknapp as the firm favourite but there are other reasonably priced contenders as well including Jose Mourinho who is looking increasingly likely to not be at Real Madrid next season. Would Mourinho take any other national job apart from Portugal? It is doubtful whether even Mourinho would weave his magic with England.
The England team now has a young side that is tipped not to do well at the 2012 Euro’s and so whoever comes in is unlikely to be successful in that tournament. Other names that are being quoted are Guus Hiddink who has said that he would welcome an approach from the FA. The saga surrounding John Terry clearly led to all this but the sentiment now will be to go for an English manager and there is really only one outstanding candidate…….but will Spurs release him?
