Basel produced one of the shocks of the group stages when they ousted an under performing Manchester United side by holding them 3-3 at Old Trafford and then beating them 2-1 at home. But football is all about performance levels and the fact that United have been in three of the past four Champions League finals doesn’t mean as much as current form and United were not playing well at the time.

But Bayern have been hugely impressive and are rightly in the frame to win the tournament this year. So it is difficult to see any further progression for Basel who seem to have reached their maximum potential in terms of results. Bayern are launching a two front attack again on league and European Cup just like their successful season of 2001.

Marseilles take on the 2010 Champions Inter Milan at the Velodrome and could stand an outside chance of progression. Inter Milan had a very bad start to the season but have pulled that around in recent months and will start favourites in this tie. It is looking like three Italian sides could be in the last eight after good wins for AC Milan and Napoli against the English teams.
